God 'determined to call together in the holy Church those who believe in Christ'

Mission for Catechesis

Resources, Courses and Community

The Mission for Catechesis promotes Catechesis for Mission.

We announce and defend the Good News of Jesus Christ the Lord.

So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:41-42

It is our vision in the Mission for Catechesis to provide a sure and extensive means of support for all those involved in catechesis and lay ministry in the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

Through offering priests and their parishioners access to resources, courses, and community, we hope to help new and established catechists alike become beacons of Christ’s light in the new evangelization.

To catechize is to share the beautiful and unchanging truths of our faith. It is sacred work, and those who engage in it deserve the best of Christian fellowship and mentoring in the midst of their busy and challenging lives.

Indeed, to carry out any lay ministry is sacred work. By all that we do in Church, we serve Christ Himself. By the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, everyone in lay ministry deserves and ought to truly receive a good and growing understanding of how sacred their ministry is, as a “limb” in the Body of Christ, such that everything they do in ministry evangelizes the Good News of Jesus Christ the Lord.

The Mission for Catechesis wants to offer all priests and their parishioners in the Diocese of Shrewsbury resources, courses, and community.

Resources

The Mission offers open resource days throughout the Diocese at which we will present:

  • Diocesan guidelines for lay ministry.
  • Talks by expert speakers on particular ministries in catechesis.
  • Guidelines in how to assess the truth, goodness and beauty of catechetical resources.
  • A comprehensive introduction to our certificated courses.

Courses

The Mission offers certificated foundation courses in catechesis and catechesis for lay ministry. This we do parish by parish, under the rightful authority of all parish priests who give their powerful blessing to our work.

All certificated foundation courses proceed by the best in catechetical workshops and one-to-one mentoring. All lead to a day of certification, retreat, and blessing at the Cathedral, and courses in catechesis lead to entry into a Diocesan Guild of Catechists, which will offer its members a standard of excellence in catechesis, and a bedrock for further formation as team leaders. If you or your parish priest wishes to know more about these courses, please contact us.

Community

In our mission to bring other people into the family of God, we need to recall and give nourishment to our own place in it as lay ministers. Catechists have a particular calling to help form others in the faith, and to do so well, we must commit to growing in our own faith formation. To this end, a community of catechists is indispensible. Entry into the Diocesan Guild of Catechists provides community, and community provides mutual spiritual support in prayer and work.

“All men are called to the same end: God himself. There is a certain resemblance between the unity of the divine persons and the fraternity that men are to establish among themselves in truth and love. Love of neighbor is inseparable from love for God.” Catechism of the Catholic Church 1878
