Year of the Word 2020

The Bishops of England and Wales have dedicated 2020 as a Year of the Word, to focus on the Bible and on The God Who Speaks’. This date coincides with the 1,600 anniversary of St Jerome’s death and the 10th anniversary of Emeritus Pope Benedict’s Apostolic Exhortation, Verbum Domini.

The Bishops’ intention is to encourage us to celebrate, live and share the word of God in a more conscious way. They describe this as …. an opportunity to enrich current practice and to develop and explore new ways of responding to ‘The God who Speaks’”.

Official prayers for the Year can be accessed here: http://www.cbcew.org.uk/home/events/the-god-who-speaks/celebrating/official-prayers/ including those for an inaugural Evening Prayer on the First Sunday of Advent when the Year officially begins.

The National Organising Team has drawn up an impressive range of events, activities and resources in which people can participate around the country. These are presented in full on the bespoke website: http://www.cbcew.org.uk/home/events/the-god-who-speaks/.

They are also laid out in a brochure, 15 copies of which have been sent to every parish together with 15 copies of the Gospel of St Matthew which is the text for the Liturgical Year A. Should you wish further copies of either, there are some available at the Curial Offices or consult the Year of the Word’s website where contact details are given.

On the diocesan level, click here http://www.dioceseofshrewsbury.org/catholic-faith/the-new-evangelisation/programme-of-formation-2019-2020 for the programme of activities around the diocese and links to several helpful resources. These are proposed as a complement to the events organised at the local level in parishes and MPAs.

The Year will culminate in a diocesan open-day to celebrate the many ways we listen to and proclaim the God Who Speaks to us today.
