For immediate release:
The Rt Rev. Mark Davies, the Bishop of Shrewsbury, has encouraged Catholics to embrace “in a positive way” the new rules on abstaining from meat on Fridays, which will take effect from September 16 – the first anniversary of the visit to Britain by Pope Benedict XVI.
In a pastoral letter to mark the anniversary of the papal visit, Bishop Davies also expressed the wish that the use of the new translation of the Roman Missal, introduced into parishes at the beginning of the month, “will enrich our prayer and understanding, help us to recognise more clearly in the Liturgy the words and images of Scripture and, by the beauty and richness of its language, express our wonder at the mystery and reality of the Mass”.
The bishop said that the changes called Catholics to stand together in the same witness of faith and unity and in the “joy of our faith seen so wonderfully during Pope Benedict’s visit to our country 12 months ago”.
