Shrewsbury Diocesan Commisssion for Christian Unity

Ecumenical Arrangements

In September 1990, "Churches Together in England" and the "Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland" came into existence. These replace the British Council of Churches.

The Catholic Church is a full member of the new arrangement. (We had never been full members of the British Council of Churches). We are now in a position to play a full part, with our Christian sisters and brothers, in our pilgrimage together towards that unity for which we long, and for which Christ prayed: "that the world will realise that it was you who sent me".

In October 1990, there came into existence "Churches Together in Cheshire", which covers our entire Diocese except Shropshire. "Churches Together in Shropshire" came into existence in 1993. Between 1994 and 1997 the Catholic Church has participated with other Christian churches in a shared discernment, reflection and prayer entitled Called to be One".

All the above exist to encourage and support work for Christian unity locally - i.e. In the local neighbourhood group of churhes, in local "Churches Together", and in Local Covenants.
