My Vocation

What to do Next

Finding the way forward

You might feel at a loss as to what to do with regard to making a choice for life. Try not to be too anxious! It is natural to feel certain worries, but do not let these get the better of you since God wants you for himself, in a way that is good for you. He will make sure to it that you are given what we need to find your vocation.

There are many ways to approach the question of vocation. You can also go to the vocations section of the website for more help. But as a rough guide, it might be worth giving the issue some ordered reflection.

First, really believe that God has a great plan for you. Thank him for it, even if you have no idea what it is yet.

Secondly, talk to other people. If you are in love with someone, ask yourself and the other person if this is really what you want. Is your relationship truly life-giving? Can you be as generous as possible in the situation that you are in now? How might you be more generous?

Thirdly, make steps to find out more! Talk to happily married people about marriage. Spend time getting to know your priest. Have a word with the sisters or consecrated laywomen or brothers that you know, or who are inspiring you. People always like to talk about how they got to where they are now!

Remember that no decision need ever be made in too much haste.

On the other hand, do not be a ditherer! It is important to realise that God never wants us to be agonising over choices that seem just too difficult. It is always best to talk to someone if you are in doubt.

And in all this, remember to pray. You might like to get help with praying by joining a group, or by clicking here. Ask Our Lady of Mount Carmel to help you. Simply say a Hail Mary to her, asking her simply, quietly, Mother, show me where to go.

God has a wonderful plan for you. In the words of Christ himself, “Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch!” (Luke 5,4). If you are generous, God will outdo your efforts to find his will for you.
