Marriage in the Catholic Church is a sacrament, a vocation, and a covenantal relationship with a mission to love (Ephesians 5:32). Before you can be married in a Catholic Church, you will be required to spend some time in preparation to help you understand marriage in the teaching of the Church and prepare you for the promises you will make on the altar. Betrothed is one such Marriage Preparation Course offered by the Shrewsbury Diocese. It is a two-day course run over two consecutive Saturdays. It covers both the spiritual/faith aspects and the relational using scientifically proven efficacious resources. You are welcome to attend the course whether you are to be married at the parish where the course is being run or not.
The course includes catechesis on the truth and meaning of the human person, the meaning of marriage in God’s plan from the beginning, the effect upon marriage of the fall into sin, and marriage in the Lord – the Good News of Jesus Christ. It also includes research-based relationship education and skills training proven to strengthen marital relationships. You will be taught skills to help you in your marriage together. This part of the course will use the teaching and insights taken from PREP inc. whose numerous studies have proven the efficacy of its approach (https://prepinc.com/pages/our-research). You will also be introduced to and have explained scientific research findings from studies that set out to discover what strengthens and what weakens the marital relationship and spousal love.
