Our Mission

The Diocese of Shrewsbury exists to make Jesus known and loved across Cheshire and Shropshire, and parts of Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Derbyshire. We are 170,000 Catholics in 89 parishes, gathered around the Eucharist, sent out in mission. The seat of the Bishop is Shrewsbury Cathedral, the Mother Church of the diocese.

"The Eucharist contains the Church’s entire spiritual wealth, Christ Himself."

Bishop Mark Davies, Pastoral Letter on Re-awakening Eucharistic Faith, November 2023.

Bishop Mark

Bishop Mark Davies is the eleventh Bishop of Shrewsbury. He was ordained priest by Bishop Thomas Holland of Salford in 1984, ordained a bishop in 2010, and has led the diocese since 1 October that year. His episcopal motto is Nihil Sine Christo, Nothing Without Christ.

Our History

In 1850 Pope Pius IX restored the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. A year later, the Diocese of Shrewsbury was founded with 26 diocesan priests and barely 20,000 faithful, on territory that then included North Wales. Bishop James Brown was 39 at his consecration. Today the diocese serves 170,000 Catholics in 89 parishes.

Our Leadership

Bishop Mark is supported by two Vicars General, an Episcopal Vicar for Education, the Curia and a Board of Trustees. Together they oversee the spiritual and practical life of the diocese, from parish ministry to schools, finance, safeguarding and worship.

Under the Patronage of

Our Lady Help of Christians

Most Holy and Immaculate Virgin, Help of Christians, we place ourselves under your motherly protection. Throughout the Church’s history you have helped Christians in times of trial, temptation and danger. Time and time again, you have proven to be the Refuge of sinners, the Hope of the hopeless, the Consoler of the afflicted, and the Comforter of the dying. We promise to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, your Son, to proclaim His Good News of God’s love for all people, and to work for peace and justice in our world. Grant, O Mary, Help of Christians, the graces of which we stand in need. May we serve Jesus with fidelity and love until death. Help us and our loved ones to attain the boundless joy of being forever with our Father in heaven. Amen.

Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us!
